A man caught wandering the aisles of a Kansas City Walmart cutting open packages with scissors pleaded guilty Thursday to an illegal gun charge.
Jeremiah Flathers, 35, is a convicted felon, and had a semi-automatic pistol in his pocket when he was arrested in January at the Walmart at 11601 East U.S. 40.
He was also wearing a bullet-resistant vest at the time.
Police were called to the store after security officers saw Flathers using scissors to cut open packages. He was walking through the store, holding the scissors in what was described in court documents as a “threatening manner.”

Officers contacted Flathers and took the scissors from him, but then he ran away from officers. When officers chased after and tackled him, Flathers told them he had a gun.
After his arrest, Flathers told investigators that he had the gun for protection and that his parole officer told him he could wear the vest.
A sentencing date has not been set.
