An 82-year-old Catholic priest remained hospitalized Monday after he was assaulted and robbed over the weekend in Kansas City, Kan.

The Rev. Thomas Kearns was attacked outside Blessed Sacrament Church at 22nd Street and Parallel Parkway.

He was struck in the face and knocked unconscious, and his car and wallet were stolen.

On Monday, he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair broken bones around his eye, said the Rev. Mark Mertes, pastor of the church.

“Father Tom is doing reasonably well, considering what he has been through,” Mertes said in a written statement Monday. “He has a positive outlook and wants to tell his friends in KCK, ‘I'll be back,’ ” Mertes said.

Mertes said that there has been an outpouring of concern for Kearns, who is grateful for the support.

“We appreciate all prayers being offered on his behalf,” the pastor said in the statement. “We also ask for prayers for those who attacked him, that they may experience Divine Grace and strength to change their manner of life and discover a new way to live that is respectful of others.”
