Stacey Graves of the Kansas City Police Department said in a news release late Wednesday that 12 -year-old Elexis Pinks had been found and was safe after she was reported missing about 6 p.m. near the 5300 block of Rinker Road.
The girl was reported missing by her mother, who said Elexis had taken their dog outside on a leash. The dog returned, still on the leash, but Elexis was gone. Elexis was last seen wearing a red University of Kansas hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Police said Elexis and her dog are inseparable, that she left her glasses at home and that she does not know many people in the area.
Police, friends and neighbors canvassed the area searching for Elexis, police officials said.
