Investigators: Fire that killed two in KCK was intentionally set

A fire that killed a toddler and her baby sitter in a Kansas City, Kan., apartment was intentionally set, authorities said Sunday.

Police were interviewing a person of interest Sunday, but no one was immediately charged.

Amiyah McClenton, 2, and Brandi S. Johnson, 34, died when the unit they occupied at Legend Oaks Apartments, 1800 N. 76th Drive, erupted into flames early Saturday.

The fire was reported at 5:45 a.m. when a smoke alarm woke a resident of another unit. The resident banged on doors to alert neighbors, and people rushed from the burning building as fire crews arrived.

Firefighters later found the victims inside one of the units. Amiyah, who had severe burns and smoke inhalation, died shortly after she arrived at a hospital.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
