Four Lee’s Summit district students are spending part of their summer at the Missouri Fine Arts Academy, a three-week residential program for exceptional Missouri artists who have completed their sophomore or junior year of high school.
The local attendees are Afton Shumate and Lilly Smith of Lee’s Summit High School; Amanda Schilling of Lee’s Summit West High School, and Miranda Chaffin of Lee’s Summit North High School.
The 2017 academy is being held this month at the Missouri State University in Springfield.
Initiated in 1996, the program offers students the opportunity to enhance their skills in such fields as dance, visual arts, theater and music while participating in interdisciplinary and co-curricular activities. It is funded through program fees, grants, endowments, scholarships and private donations.
