Lee’s Summit Medical Center, UCM reach agreement for wide-ranging collaboration

Lee’s Summit burnished its credentials as a suburban health-care hub when the University of Central Missouri signed a memorandum of understanding with Lee’s Summit Medical Center for collaboration on a wide range of new initiatives, including training and job placement.

“We are excited about partnering with Lee’s Summit Medical Center, to assist them in developing their programs and associates,” Joe Mullins, UCM consultant for Workforce and Professional Development at the Missouri Innovation Campus, said in a release announcing the partnership. “We have been working with their executive team and department leadership over the last few months in finding solutions to exceed their current and future needs.”

Among them, HCA Midwest Health, the network to which Lee’s Summit Medical Center belongs, will post job listings on UCM’s hiring portal for graduates in medical billing and coding, pharmacy, phlebotomy, patient care, and medical assistant programs.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center also will serve as a clinical site for UCM’s nursing program, which will provide training for the hospital’s nursing edication staff through its simulators at the Missouri Innovation Campus.

UCM’s Office of Career Services also will work with Lee’s Summit Medical Center to provide a real-world outlet for career exploration by students, including resume creating mock interviews and streamlined access to career fairs.

Additionally, UCM will help provide ongoing training for the hospital’s surgical nurses and develop new curriculum for an ethical leadership certification as part of the Master of Business Administration degree program.

The agreement also calls for UCM and Lee’s Summit Medical Center to have access to guest lecturers.

UCM also agreed to waive the application fee for any HCA Midwest employees seeking a degree or certificate among other training, promotional and organizational needs.

UCM’s ties with Lee’s Summit already run deep thanks to the Missouri Innovation Campus, a collaboration with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and Metropolitan Community College for STEM education.

The 137,000-square-foot facility, which opened in August 2017, is owned by Lee’s Summit R-7, but UCM signed a 20-year lease agreement and occupies 60 percent of the building, including high-tech labs for the university’s Nursing Department.
