Shawnee Mission Medical Center said it has purchased a new cleaning system that uses ultraviolet light technology to eliminate bacteria as part of its effort to reduce the rate of hospital-associated infections. It’s called Iris — short for Intelligent Room Sterilization System — and it features lamps and emitters that produce a high-intensity UV field to sterilize surfaces in about 15 minutes. Denise McNerney, chief executive of iBossWell Inc. in Prairie Village, was recently honored by the Association for Strategic Planning at its national conference in Atlanta. She received the Janis Laureen Outstanding Service Award for her leadership in designing, conducting and analyzing a large-scale national survey on strategic planning practices in the nonprofit sector.
Two Johnson County employers — Garmin Ltd., and the city of Shawnee — have been recognized for their support of military guard and reserve employees. They were among the 138 employers nationwide to be honored as semifinalists for a national award sponsored by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a U.S. Department of Defense committee.
Garmin, the Olathe-based maker of satellite navigation devices, and the city of Shawnee were nominated by a guard or reserve employee for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. Nearly 2,900 employers were nominated.
The finalists will be announced later this month, and up to 15 award recipients will be named early this summer and honored in Washington, D.C., in September.
