The CommunityAmerica Credit Union has formed a charitable foundation to aid struggling families in northeastern Kansas.
Lenexa-based CommuntyAmerica said its foundation’s first effort will be Family Financial Transformations. Working with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, the foundation will help support families who are eligible to join the credit union and are in the Catholic Charities’ network.
“Participants will be involved in intensive case management and financial literacy programming, including a personal financial coach,” said Ken Williams, president of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, in an announcement.
Williams said the work will help families “break the generational cycles of debt.”
Dennis Pierce, chief executive of CommunityAmerica, said families that get in over their heads financially often struggle with basics such as saving money and paying bills on time. Pierce said the program will include comprehensive counseling and financial classes.
The credit union would not say how much money the CommunityAmerica Foundation has available, though it began with “a seven-figure amount,” and there are plans to increase its resources to make programs sustainable.
Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas serves 21 counties and assists more than 85,000 people of all faiths each year. It provides health and human services through sites in Atchison, Emporia, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe and Topeka. It also has a mobile service.
