A proposal to renovate the Camelot Court shopping center took a big step forward this week when the Leawood City Council signed off on a preliminary plan for work.
The council looked at renderings of how the shopping center at 119th Street and Roe Avenue would look after improvements, and members approved the revised preliminary plan.

They also approved special use permits for a Tide dry cleaner and a a CVS drug store, each with a drive-through lane, and a “big box” Hen House grocery store.
John Peterson, an attorney for Camelot Court owners 95 West, said he “wants to make this a pretty cool place to come in and do your shopping experience.”
The council will vote later on a Community Improvement District that would fund work at Camelot Court. Council members said they’d like the project to break ground in the fall if they approve the CID.
First Ward Councilwoman Debra Filla said Peterson and his team had the council’s support. “They’re walking the talk,” she said.
The council will open the project to public comment at its May 6 meeting.
Also at the meeting on Monday, the council received an update on progress toward a $188,232 dog park.
The park will be on eight acres that Hallbrook Office Center LLC is giving the city. It lies between Indian Creek, State Line Road, College Boulevard, and Interstate 435.
The proposal has been severely cut back from earlier plans for a $300,000 project that included a play structure. The park still will have some amenities, like a water bowl for dogs and a water hose for their human companions. On Monday night, council members looked at fence samples.
The council will meet in another working session May 6.
