High school fall sports teams begin practicing on Monday

The Kansas high school cross country state meet’s Class 5A girls race got underway last fall at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. When it was all over, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls squad (yellow uniforms) had won the Class 5A team championship.

For Kansas fall sports high school athletes and coaches, the wait is almost over.

On Monday, fall sports teams — football, boys soccer, cross country, girls golf, girls tennis, gymnastics and volleyball — will begin practicing and the competition won’t be far behind. Games and meets and matches and tournaments are about to kick into full gear and won’t end until late November.

If there’s pressure for any squads, perhaps it mostly falls on defending state champions. Here’s a reminder of teams that will kick off practice on Monday that won state championships last fall.

Football: Mill Valley in Class 5A and Bishop Miege in Class 4A Division I.

Boys soccer: Blue Valley Northwest in Class 6A.

Cross Country: St. Thomas Aquinas girls in Class 5A and the following boys teams — Olathe North in Class 6A, St. Thomas Aquinas in Class 5A and Maranatha Academy in Class 2A.

Girls golf: Shawnee Mission East in Class 6A.

Girls tennis: Blue Valley North in Class 6A.

Gymnastics: Olathe East (all classes in one meet).

Volleyball: Blue Valley West in Class 6A, St. James Academy in Class 5A and Bishop Miege in Class 4A Division I.
