A new restaurant and five stores are under construction and are set to open by next year as part of phase two of the Belton Gateway project, the city’s economic development staff announced earlier this month.
Kneaders Bakery and Cafe is expected to open in late August followed by five retailers on track to open by early 2018. The new stores include Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls, Party City, Petco and Five Below.
The $136 million Belton Gateway project is being developed by Christie Development Associates LLC, a company based near Stilwell, Kan. The 47-acre Belton Gateway property is located west of Interstate 49 along Missouri Y in Belton and has been in the works since 2014 when construction started on phase one.
The first phase of the project included the opening of Academy Sports and Outdoors, Hobby Lobby and two multiple-tenant retail buildings that are now home to Belton Family Dental Care, Fazoli’s and Cricket Wireless. The city said phase one also has potential for construction of a 20,000-square-foot hotel.
Between the two phases, the city said Belton Gateway includes more than 182,000 square feet of space for new development.
“Belton Gateway is quickly becoming Cass County’s premier retail destination, thanks to its location near I-49 and Y Highway,” said Belton Community and Economic Development Director Jay Leipzig. “We are seeing a tremendous amount of activity in this corridor, which offers retailers great visibility and convenient highway access due to a new interchange.”
The city said its also expecting changes in traffic with the second phase of Belton Gateway underway.
With the announcement of phase two, the city said relocation of Turner Road is set to be finished in the third quarter of 2017 and is expected to improve traffic flow to the North Scott redevelopment area. In addition, the city said a traffic light will be placed at a new intersection at Missouri Y and Turner Road, allowing drivers to turn left onto Missouri Y toward I-49.
