William Jewell College

Judge to speak: A former chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court will deliver the annual “Perspectives on the Common Good: Women and Society” lecture at 7:30 p.m.

Mary R. Russell will speak on “Women Jurists Ahead of Their Time” in Room 221 of the Yates-Gill College Union on the campus in Liberty. The lecture is open to the public.

Russell was appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court in 2004. She completed a two-year term as chief justice in 2015. She earned the Missouri Lawyers Media “Woman of the Year” Award in 2014 and the Equal Justice Award, given by the Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, in 1994 for her efforts to provide pro bono services to victims of the 1993 flood.

Park Hill South High School

National recognition: Grant Pace, a senior, has been named a candidate in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars program.

He is one of about 5,000 students nationwide chosen for achievements, leadership, character and involvement in the community and school activities.

The program honors the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The U.S. Department of Education will choose semifinalists in April. The Presidential Scholars will be named in May.

Platte County R-3 High School

Robotics winners: The team of Nathan Gurgens, Josh McKeague, Mikayla Tessmer and Will Valentine, with programming assistance from Zach Lienemann and Josh Richardson, placed second in competition.

They were among 52 teams competing at the Four State Vex Shoot Out in Joplin.

Liberty High School

Aspiring artist: Artwork by Sama Ek, a senior, has been chosen for an exhibit in the Missouri Capitol building in Jefferson City.

She is one of 34 students selected statewide by senators to showcase fine arts programs in all the districts. The artwork will hang in the capitol throughout 2016. An awards ceremony will be held on March 31.
