Didn’t we just vote on Nov. 4? Is it time to think about elections already?
Yes, if you aspire to serve on your local school board, city council or board of aldermen. Filing starts this month for the spring elections.
The filing periods vary:
▪ Kansas City: The mayor’s spot and all 12 council seats are up for election. Filing began Tuesday and closes at 5 p.m. Jan. 13. Candidates may file with the city clerk or at the Kansas City, Platte County or Clay County election boards.

No elections are scheduled next spring for the Kansas City Public Schools.
▪ Suburban areas and other school boards: Filing closes at 5 p.m. Jan. 20 for races that don’t involve Kansas City Hall, but the start date varies.
It’s Dec. 16 outside Kansas City, but Dec. 23 for jurisdictions that include part of Kansas City. Filing starts Dec. 23, for example, for Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Park Hill and Center schools.
Candidates should file at their city or school district offices. Although the Missouri deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 20, some local offices may not be open that late. Check for specifics.
