Councilman on national board
Kansas City Councilman Jermaine Reed has been named to a two-year term on the National League of Cities board of directors. He was elected by the organization’s membership at its recent national conference.
“In this role, I will have an opportunity to collaborate with influential elected officials from across the country to set a policy agenda that leads to stronger communities,” Reed, who represents the city’s 3rd City Council District, said in a news release.
Domestic violence shelter collecting items

The Rose Brooks Center, a domestic violence agency in Kansas City, is collecting new, unwrapped gifts, household items and other essentials at its Holiday Store at the Ward Parkway shopping center.
Through Dec. 18, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
This year’s wish list includes gifts for women and children, such as gift cards, art supplies and sports equipment. The store will also collect items needed year-round, such as twin sheets, pajamas and robes, towels, washcloths and toiletries. The complete list is at www.RoseBrooks.org.
The donations will help brighten the holidays for shelter residents. The shopping center is at 8600 Ward Parkway in Kansas City.
Open house, Fairy Princess at KC Museum
The Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall will host its Neighborhood Holiday Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Refreshments will be served and the public can meet the 2014 Fairy Princesses and Fairy Princess costume contest winners. The museum is at 3218 Gladstone Blvd. in northeast Kansas City.
The Fairy Princess will hold court the first three weekends in December at the museum. She will be there from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 7, 14 and 21.

Children’s festival is Saturday
Children and their famlies are invited to Holidazzle, a free holiday children’s festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Blue Parkway in Kansas City.
Activities include a Christmas movie, arts and crafts, a gift bag giveaway, refreshments and picture with Santa, who arrives at 3 p.m.
