Alta Vista Charter High School
Scholarship recipients: Alta Vista Charter High School seniors Natalia Hernandez and Martin Munoz won the University of Central Missouri’s Cesar E. Chavez Scholarships.
The award ceremony was held at Guadalupe Center in Kansas City on April 25 as part of the Cesar E. Chavez Day celebration.
Hernandez is the daughter of Bulmaro and Cristina Hernandez of Kansas City. Munoz is the son of Martin Munoz and Flor Martinez-Ortiz of Kansas City.

The scholarships provide $3,125 per year in financial assistance at the university and may be renewed annually if the student meets the academic requirements, the release states. The students will attend UCM in the fall.
Hernandez was co-captain of the volleyball team at Alta Vista and a member of the Early College Program, according to the release.
She attended the College of St. Mary Summer Latino Program, tutored elementary school students at Derrick Thomas Academy in Kansas City, volunteered for Harvesters, Inc. and was a member of a variety of school organizations, according to the release.
Munoz was a teacher’s assistant at Alta Vista and tutored students in his junior and senior years, the release states. He was chair of the prom committee, organizing fundraisers and was the club accountant.
