Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter (FOPAS) will host its Paws in the Park Dog Walk Festival 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 17 at English Landing Park in Parkville.
The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit and will be hosted by local celebrity Joel Nichols, of KSHB-TV.
“This event truly is something fun for the whole family with vendors, raffles, KC Disc Dog demonstrations, contests, and our friend, Joel Nichols,” said Cindy Spake, a FOPAS volunteer and board member. “We consider it a Northland tradition in its 11th year to benefit the Parkville Animal Shelter.”
Registration is $25 for each dog or walker participating in the events. Register the morning of the event or online at parkvilleshelter.com/pawsinpark. Registrants will receive a T-shirt and gift bag while they last.
“Of course, we want people to come out and enjoy the day whether or not they register. The more the merrier,” Spake said. “It is, however, a fundraiser so we ask that people bringing their dogs register.”
The schedule includes a performance by KC Disc Dogs at 9 a.m.; Adoptable Dog Parade at 9:30 a.m.; One Mile Dog Walk at 10 a.m.; Biscuit Catching Contest at 10:45 a.m.; and Canine Costume Contest at 11:30 a.m.
According to Spake, the adoptable dog parade will include dogs from shelters and rescue groups. “It’s literally a little parade across the stage. The emcee will talk about the dog and ask the volunteer about the dog and people can decide if they want to meet the dog.”
Money raised from the event goes to FOPAS. The organization’s goals are to take care of the animals in the Parkville Animal Shelter, work to improve their living conditions, raise awareness and educate the public.
