Grandfamilies library event

Grandparents raising grandchildren are invited to attend a Northland Grandfamilies Program at the Antioch Branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library at 11 a.m. June 12. Grandchildren are also welcome.

Northland Grandfamilies is a cooperative program between Clay County Senior Services, Platte County Senior Fund and the University of Missouri Extension Council in Clay County.

“Basically the program is for grandparents and other relatives raising grandchildren,” said Christine Brunkow, program associate. “We want to help the grandparents and their grandchildren feel comfortable exploring the library and learn what is available. We’ll provide the information in a family-friendly and fun format,” Brunkow said.

More than 4,000 grandparents in the Northland are living with grandchildren under the age of 18, she said.

The Grandfamilies Program meets monthly in Clay and Platte counties as a support group. Monthly meetings have focused on legal concerns, financial burdens, emotional and physical stress, advocacy, and referrals to social service agencies.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 N.E. Vivion Road, Kansas City, North; and on the fourth Monday at 6 p.m. at Platte Woods United Methodist, 7310 NW Prairie View Road, Platte Woods.
