Lightning strikes may have caused two fires early Friday in Johnson County.

The first fire was reported about 2 a.m. Friday at the Park Edge Apartments in the 8200 block of Renner Road near Shawnee Mission Park in Lenexa.

All residents escaped unharmed, and some said they believed lightning may have caused the fire.

Fire officials were at the scene attempting to determine the cause.

Just after 4 a.m. Friday, Overland Park and Leawood firefighters were called to a house fire in the 8500 block of West 155th Street. All the home’s residents got out safely.

Firefighters found a fire in the attic and put it out in about 30 minutes.

The homeowner reported hearing a loud boom, followed by smoke alarms sounding and the electricity going out.

Fire officials said they believe the fire was caused by lightning, but they are investigating to determine the exact cause.
