A puppy broke his leg, lost some teeth and bruised his lungs after someone threw him from a balcony in Kansas City.

Kansas City animal control officers brought the puppy, named Max, to the Kansas City Animal Shelter on Aug. 4, said Tori Fugate, director of market and development for KC Pet Project, which operates the shelter.

Max’s front right leg was fractured and several of his front teeth were knocked out, Fugate said. The dog also bruised his lungs in the fall, making it difficult for the animal to breathe.

“Our vets watched him closely to make sure he didn’t have any internal injuries,” Fugate said. “He’s bouncing back remarkably well.”

Police were investigating the case, Fugate said. Max’s former owner said an acquaintance threw the puppy off the balcony.

The shelter’s veterinary team applied a splint to his fractured leg and was managing his pain. But Max will need surgery to fix the damage to his leg. KC Pet Project is talking to orthopedic surgeons, and he will likely require a plate and pins in his leg to prevent future chronic pain.

“He’s in quite a bit of pain right now,” Fugate said. “But he’s a loving, happy little puppy that wants to be everybody’s friend.”

She said the border collie-mix is about 5 months old and has a fun personality.

After the puppy undergoes surgery, he will recover in a foster home where he can get rest and relaxation and heal both the leg and his lungs.

Max’s surgery and care is expected to cost $2,000. People can donate money to donate.kcpetproject.org/helpformax.
