A circuit malfunction ignited a fire Thursday at a substation yard outside the Kansas City Power & Light Co. plant in the East Bottoms of Kansas City.

The substation fire, located in the 8700 block of Hawthorne Road, was reported just after 11:30 a.m.

“There were some issues with the circuit that caused the fire,” said Courtney Hughley, KCP&L spokeswoman. “That circuit only served one customer, and service to it has been switched to another circuit.”

Fire crews battled the large blaze, which was mostly out by about 1 p.m. No injuries were reported.
