Man wounded in gunfight with police dies from his injuries

A man who allegedly shot an officer in the leg during a standoff at a house in Kansas City’s northeast area has died, police said Tuesday.

Police said that Joel Bravard, 26, died from his injuries suffered during the standoff. He was found shot in the head inside the house.

Police said they continue to investigate the cause of Bravard’s injury.

The standoff began about 11 a.m. Thursday when detectives and tactical officers went to the house in the 500 block of North Lawndale Avenue.

Bravard allegedly started shooting at the tactical officers, striking one in the leg, which led to a standoff that lasted about two hours.

The officer was treated at a hospital and is doing well, police said.

Police had gone to the house looking for Bravard on a Platte County warrant for failure to appear in a case involving stolen property.

Detectives also wanted to question him about the death of 19-year-old Michelle L. Russell, who was shot Nov. 21 at a Kansas City, North, motel. Her body was found hours later inside a car near Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence.
