KC man sentenced for shooting at Lee’s Summit police officer

An 18-year-old Kansas City man was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison for firing a gun at a Lee’s Summit police officer in June 2012.

Ash-Od L. Chavez earlier had pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer.

An officer responding to a call in the 500 block of Northeast Howard Avenue saw Chavez walking away from him and ordered him to stop. Chavez fired two shots and ran, court records alleged.

After his arrest, Chavez told police he fired at the officer because he didn’t want to be caught with a weapon, court records said.
