Police believe body found in Lawrence is that of missing student

Lawrence police believe a body discovered Monday afternoon is that of a missing graduate student at the University of Kansas.

The body was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Monday in the grass outside a home at 837 Avalon Drive. The site is near to where 23-year-old Gianfranco Villagomez-Saldana was last seen early Saturday morning, but in the opposite direction from where he reportedly was headed.

Villagomez-Saldana, a graduate student from Peru, had not been seen since. Friends said it was extremely out of character for him to be out of touch or not to return to his apartment.

Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said the preliminary investigation does not indicate foul play was involved but that an autopsy will be performed Tuesday.
