With speeds reaching upwards of 80 miles per hour, police from Olathe and multiple other law enforcement agencies Saturday pursued a suspected armed robber on a chase that led them north into Kansas City, Kan. where police also joined in.
The suspect and his car, disabled by road spikes, finally came to rest at about1:35 p.m. at 11th Street and Grandview Boulevard, following a drama that began at about12:45 p.m.
That's when Olathe police got a call about a vehicle that had left the scene of a suspected armed robbery of Cirilla’s adult store on East Sante Fe Street. An Olathe officer in a police cruiser soon spotted what dispatcher said was a black Hyundai, which then took off at high speeds.
The chase led onto I-435, east along I-70 and then eventually north up 18th Expressway and along State and Minnesota avenues.
Olathe police were quickly joined by police from Lenexa, the Kansas State Highway Patrol, and then Kansas City, Kan.
“His car is totally disabled. It's going to be disabled here in a minute,” an officer said calmly over police radio, sirens blaring, as she chased down the suspect.
The suspect's car reportedly damaged at least two parked cars, denting metal and smashing glass, before coming to a stop. Police quickly took the suspect into custody.
