A pot of broth started a house fire in Olathe on Thanksgiving Day, causing $40,000 in damage.
No one was at home at the time of the fire, which was reported about 2:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of East 152nd Circle after neighbors saw smoke. When firefighters arrived, they saw flames in the kitchen and spent about 10 minutes putting out the fire.
Damage from fire was contained to the kitchen, but smoke damaged the rest of the home, said fire division chief, David Dock.
Investigators determined a pot of broth left simmering caused the blaze. The fire displaced a family of six and their dog, Dock said. They will be staying with relatives.
