Comedian Jim Gaffigan, performing Friday at the Midland, isn’t just about Hot Pockets

Jim Gaffigan may be America’s funniest clean comic.

His largely profanity-free observations are hilarious. Gaffigan’s most famous routine, in which he mocks the notorious frozen food brand Hot Pockets, isn’t even among his funniest gags.

A bit about the behavior of travelers at hotel pools, for instance, is even more amusing.

He also jokes about eating at McDonald’s, bowling, his pale complexion and family vacations. Much of Gaffigan’s appeal lies in his self-deprecating delivery.

He gleefully interjects the hypothetical thoughts of a nonplussed member of the audience throughout his performances.

And he’s a best-selling author, as well. His collection “Dad Is Fat” talks about the hilarity that ensues when you’re the father of five kids.

Just as area fans had fully embraced the unorthodox rhythms of Major League Soccer, the league presented its advocates with an especially odd scheduling twist. The playoffs ground to an awkward halt midway through the hotly contested quarterfinal competition.

After Sporting KC held the Houston Dynamo to a scoreless draw in the first of a two-game set on Nov. 9, the league began a two-week hiatus to allow players to participate in international FIFA matches.

The ill-timed sabbatical shouldn’t dim the enthusiasm of rabid Sporting fans at the sold-out Sporting Park on Saturday for Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference Finals. The winning club advances to MLS’ championship series.
