One person seriously hurt in KCK apartment fire

A man was hospitalized Monday with second and third-degree burns to his upper body from a fire in a Kansas City, Kan., apartment building.

The fire was reported just after 1:30 p.m. Monday at a building in the 4100 block of Mission Road. The first firefighters on the scene said that heavy flames were coming from the three-story structure. Damage was estimated at $180,000. The cause was under investigation. The unit had a smoke detector.

The American Red Cross was called to help 19 adults and 11 children who were displaced by the fire.
