Parent is accused of assaulting school principal during dress code dispute

Kansas City police arrested two parents Tuesday afternoon at an elementary school after one of them allegedly chest-bumped the principal and kicked over a flower pot in a dress code dispute.

Officers cited one parent with city violations of assault and property damage. She was taken to jail. The other parent was cited for disorderly conduct. She was given a signature bond and was allowed to take her son home.

The incident erupted about 12:10 p.m. at Burke Elementary, 11115 Bennington Ave., in the Hickman Mills School District, after the parents were notified that their son’s khaki pants violated the dress code because the pants had cargo pockets. The parents showed up at the school angry, a school official said, and the principal tried to defuse the situation but was pushed and allegedly chest-bumped by one parent.

Police were investigating.
