Julianne Hough apologizes for blackface Halloween costume

Who could possibly think that it’s OK to walk around in blackface at any time, in any place, on any day, for any reason? Apparently Julianne Hough thought that it was OK to do it for Halloween – until the Internet found out.

And now the “Footloose” actress and former “Dancing With the Stars” pro has apologized for her unfortunate costume choice.

For a Halloween party in Beverly Hills Friday night she dressed up as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren from the Netflix comedy “Orange Is the New Black.”

Crazy Eyes is black. Julianne is not. But that was solved easily enough with some dark makeup on her face and her blond hair – also darkened – worn in Crazy Eye’s signature knots.

Criticism was swift and sharp on social media and websites after photos from the party hit the Internet.

“Julianne Hough wore blackface to a party. Nothing screams Halloween like good ole fashion racism.”

“New favorite part of Halloween is seeing what celebrities are stupid enough to go blackface. Thanks Julianne Hough!”

Actress Martha Plimpton was not amused, either, posting on Twitter: “Welp, this was fun! Anywhozzles, no blackface for white peoples, k? YAY! Great. Have a great weekend everybody!”

Hough tried to stem the backlash by issuing an apology on Saturday.

"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” she wrote. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."

No apology was necessary for some folks like Erin who posted this (verbatim) on E!’s comment board: “I think people should just shut up and stop acting like this is so offensive because its not.

“She was dressing up as a character from a tv show and shes not black face shes just really tan and you dont see us white folks freaking out about Micheal Jackson painting his face white permanently do you? No. So chill the **** out and stop bashing her for going as one of her favorite characters.”

She’s not blackface, she’s just really tan?

That’s about the only laughable thing about this situation.
