Valdepena crashed a rental truck into the house in the 9600 block of McGee Street, entered the home and shot her twice before his gun jammed. He then stabbed her with a knife.
The woman ran outside and a neighbor who had heard the disturbance grabbed a gun and held Valdepena until police arrived.
He pleaded guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of assault, arson, unlawful use of a weapon, burglary and violation of a protection order.
