Package at downtown Olathe post office spurs investigation

Authorities in Olathe on Wednesday afternoon declared safe a suspicious package left outside a downtown post office.

Members of the Olathe Fire Department’s bomb squad and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service began investigating the abandoned package just before 2 p.m. Earlier, an apparent customer had walked into the post office at 110 N. Chestnut St. carrying the package, said Sgt. Bryan Hill, Olathe police spokesman.

“He asked how much, they gave him a price, he said he wasn’t going to pay it and then he set the package down outside,” Hill said.

Authorities evacuated the post office near North Chestnut and East Santa Fe streets and re-routed traffic on streets near the facility.

Postal authorities continue to investigate the incident.
