A new memorial honoring the early pioneers who traveled the Santa Fe Trail has been dedicated in mid-Missouri.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that nearly 200 people gathered over the weekend at the Katy Trail trailhead at New Franklin for the dedication event.
One-hundred-year-old Lowell Creed was part of the crowd. His great-great-grandmother, Millie Cooper, is featured on one of the monuments. Cooper was only 12 when she made a life-or-death ride seeking reinforcements for a fort that was under siege by Indians allied with British forces during the War of 1812.
Artists Harry Weber and Kevin Hale created the series of five granite figures that comprise "Franklin: Mother of the Santa Fe Trail." Private donations and a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation paid for the project.
