Life sentence imposed for 2007 drive-by slaying in KC.

A Jackson County judge on Friday sentenced Richard V. Cooper to life in prison for his role in a drive-by shooting six years ago in front of a tire shop.

Cooper, 30, was one of three defendants charged in the March 2007 murder of Eliseo W. Thomas, 22, at 30th Street and Agnes Avenue. Officers on routine patrol heard multiple shots directed at several young men on the sidewalk and pursued a fleeing car. During the chase, shots were fired at the police vehicle.

The defendants were arrested after their car crashed.

Prosecutors said Cooper was sentenced on 10 counts, including second-degree murder and four counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.

A co-defendant, Rayshawn Taylor, was sentenced earlier to life without parole, prosecutors said. The third defendant, Markus Lee, was shot to death in 2011 in Kansas City, Kan.
