A judge has found a northeast Missouri man incompetent to stand trial in the grisly dismemberment death of a neighbor.
Adair County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wilson says a judge found 49-year-old Paul R. Potter of Kirksville incompetent for trial after he underwent a psychiatric evaluation.
The Kirksville Daily Express reportsthat Potter’s status will be reviewed in six months.
Potter faces first-degree murder and other charges in the January death of 74-year-old Willis Edward Meredith. Prosecutors say Potter stabbed Meredith, dismembered his body and set fires to conceal the crime.
He also allegedly threw the victim’s arms at witnesses before he was arrested
Court records indicate Potter was evaluated at Fulton State Hospital. He pleaded not guilty in April.
