Highway accidents near Kauffman Stadium on Monday looked horrific but did not result in any critical injuries, police said.
One accident at 5:37 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 at Blue Ridge Cutoff resulted in two vehicles being engulfed in flames. Kansas City Police Sgt. DeEtta Jacobs said one vehicle experienced a mechanical problem and his car caught fire. As traffic slowed down, an oncoming vehicle rear-ended another one, causing it to catch fire.
That chain reaction closed the westbound lanes until about 7:30 p.m.
Another incident on southbound Interstate 435 involved a vehicle rear-ending another one and causing it to overturn. Five people were sent to the hospital, including a backseat passenger in the striking vehicle who was not wearing a seat belt and whose head hit the windshield.
