Kansas City police on Thursday continued searching for a 20-year-old Blue Springs man who mysteriously vanished from the city’s West Side on Saturday night.
Police have found no signs of foul play, yet they acknowledge that Robert Seth Walter’s disappearance is strange.
“It’s kind of weird that he was doing his normal thing, but all of the sudden, everything stopped on Saturday,” said Sgt. Chris Lantz, who is supervising the investigation. “You wouldn’t normally see a kid unplug from his life like that.”
Walter had worked Saturday at the Apple store in Leawood, then went out with two co-workers, his dad said. The co-workers told police they dropped Walter off at his car near 17th and Madison streets about 10 p.m., but they did not see him drive away.
Walter and his 2012 maroon Nissan Altima have not been seen since.
Police said Walter had intended to visit a friend who lived in Kansas, but the friend declined the visit. It was unclear if Walter headed toward Kansas, or home to Blue Springs, where he lived with his parents, or somewhere else.
Walter’s phone battery had died before he vanished, police said. He reportedly left his wallet at his co-worker’s loft. Police and relatives agree it would be unusual for Walter to run away without a working cell phone or his wallet. His financial record has shown no activity since Saturday, police said.
Police were trying to pull videotapes from surveillance cameras in the West Side. Police also were following tips, including some that came in Wednesday about possible sightings of Walter in Westport. But police wonder why he hasn’t contacted anyone.
Walter’s father, Chris Walter, said everything was going right for his son so it wouldn’t make sense for him to run away. His parents had planned to help him find a loft on Monday and meet with officials at the University of Missouri-Kansas City about his scholarships on Tuesday.
When his parents last saw him, “he was as happy as can be,” Chris Walter said.
Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477). Robert Walter was last seen wearing black shorts, shirt and shoes. His Altima has a spoiler, Missouri plates MK8 E8X and minor front-end damage.
