Olathe man pleads guilty to murder

An Olathe man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Johnson County District Court to premeditated first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Robert Shaun Ward, 35, was charged in the Sept. 18, 2011, death of 35-year-old David Wayne Barry, also of Olathe.

According to testimony at a November 2011 hearing, Ward, Barry and three other men were drinking and passing around a handgun in Ward’s garage. Ward asked the other men to leave just before Barry was shot.

Though witnesses did not agree as to whether the men had been arguing, a detective testified that Ward told investigators later that Barry had disrespected him.

A judge set sentencing for Sept. 12.
