Dane Christensen kept his wits about him when his dad collapsed in their home last week.
The Kansas City, Kan., boy had the presence of mind to call 911 and try to wake his dad up. And on Saturday, a Leavenworth County EMS crew went out to Dane’s home on his eighth birthday to give him an Honorary Hero Award.

Last Tuesday, Dane’s dad, 50-year-old Sim Christensen, collapsed after working outside in the heat for his job as a professional landscaper. His wife, Maxine, and their 11-year-old daughter, Halle, were out shopping at the time.
Sim, who was doing paperwork at the time, hit his head as he fell and started seizing.
“The next thing I know my son is trying to wake me up saying, ‘Daddy, Daddy,’ ” Christensen said. “And he’s crying, saying ‘You fell down! I called 911.’ ”
Christensen said working out in the heat caused an imbalance in electrolytes and potassium. Doctors kept him in the hospital Tuesday and Wednesday night, but he’s back at home and in good health now.
