Man again accused of stealing copper from the city

A man who pleaded guilty earlier this year to stealing copper wire from the city has been charged anew with the same offense.

Jake A. Shields, 39, was arrested Sunday after Shawnee police conducted a surveillance operation. Police on Friday learned of approximately 1,300 feet of copper wire that had been stripped from street light poles in the 7000 block of Elmridge Street. The wire had been hidden in weeds by the side of the road.

Police watched and on Sunday morning saw someone remove the wire. Shields was arrested and the wire recovered from a location in the 7000 block of Renner Road. The value of the wire was estimated at $7,000. He was in jail Monday in lieu of $25,000 bond.

Court records show Shields was also charged in February with stealing copper wire from the city. He pleaded guilty this spring and was placed on probation.
