Independence man gets 7-year sentence for taking disability payments while working

A Kansas City federal judge sentenced an Independence man Thursday to seven years in prison for receiving federal disability payments while operating a mortgage brokerage.

Jurors convicted Charles Daniel Koss, 63, in February of theft and fraud in the scheme.

Evidence at trial showed that Koss received almost $213,000 in Social Security disability payments between 1994 and 2010 while he operated Embassy Mortgage in Blue Springs.

When presented with a bill for the overpayment in 2010, Koss mailed in a “registered private money order” drawing on a non-existent trust account at the U.S. Treasury.
