From the downtown area of Kansas City southwest to Gardner, construction is likely to make travel difficult this weekend for motorists using Interstate 35.
As part of a larger project to rehabilitate several downtown-area bridges, the Missouri Department of Transportation is closing the 12th Street Bridge and its I-35 ramps for two months on the west side of the Downtown Loop.
The closure was to begin at 10 p.m. Friday and last until early September, forcing motorists to find other routes to the West Bottoms and I-35.
Along with the closure, until 5 a.m. Monday, I-35 will be out of commission while crews demolish the 12th Street Bridge and remove debris. Traffic will be detoured.
In the Olathe/Gardner area, some Saturday closures will brief but significant:
Sometime between 6 and 10 a.m., all southbound lanes will be closed for 15 to 30 minutes from 119th Street to Santa Fe Street for KC Scout overhead sign truss installation. That stretch will be reduced to one southbound lane during that same period.
• Sometime between 8 a.m. and noon, all northbound lanes will be closed for 15 to 30 minutes at Gardner Road for similar sign truss installation. The northbound stretch from Gardner to Moonlight roads will be reduced to one lane during that same period.
