Kansas City police confirmed Thursday that a tire losing its tread caused a one-vehicle wreck Wednesday on Interstate 435 that injured nine people and snarled traffic.
The wreck occurred about 5:40 p.m. just east of 103rd Street. After the tread separated from the tire, the Ford Explorer slid across the road and flipped when it hit the soft grass, police said.

The vehicle contained two women and their seven children, ages 3 to 10, although the vehicle had only five seats, police said. Witnesses told police the adult passenger and two children were thrown from the vehicle. One child was buckled into a car seat that apparently had been sitting loose in the cargo area. The car seat got stuck in the window when the car rolled, witnesses told police.
Most of the injuries were minor, except for a punctured lung suffered by the woman passenger, police said.
