Kansas City police on Monday identified a 29-year-old man shot to death near 16th Street and Topping Avenue Sunday night as Oscar H. Chavez.
Two of his friends had talked to Chavez earlier in the day and made plans to meet at his home. When they arrived about 6:40 p.m., they found him covered in blood in the basement.
Police found his truck riddled with bullet holes next to the home with its driver side door open, but police believe the damage is old. Homicide Sgt. Joe Mabin said investigators believe Chavez was shot inside his home shortly before his friends showed up.
Family members told police Chavez struggled with drug addiction and often hung with the wrong crowd. He had a wife and young son who were not home at the time. They often stayed with relatives, police said.
Investigators did not have any motive or suspect information.
