Kansas coach Bill Self completed his staff for the 2013-14 season on Wednesday, promoting Brennan Bechard into the Jayhawks’ director of basketball operations role and hiring former St. John’s assistant Fred Quartlebaum as the program’s director of student-athlete development.
Bechard, a former KU walk-on, joined the staff as a graduate student manager in 2009 and served as the assistant director of basketball operations for the last two seasons. Quartlebaum, meanwhile, arrives at Kansas after spending six years at St. John’s as an assistant under Norm Roberts, a current KU assistant. He was also an assistant under Matt Doherty at North Carolina from 2000-2003, helping recruit a nucleus that would eventually win an NCAA title in 2005. His most recent stop came at Mercy College, where he worked as associate director of PACT, a leadership and mentoring program.
“I am extremely excited about this opportunity,” said Quartlebaum, who played at Fordham from 1985-89. “What a thrill to come back and work with coach Roberts and the basketball program at Kansas. Coach Self is one of the top coaches in college basketball and to have the opportunity learn under his direction is such a privilege for me. I’m thrilled to be a part of Kansas basketball.”
The promotion of Bechard ends a run of former head coaches in the director of operations role. Current Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson held the position from 2008 to 2012, while former Nebraska coach Doc Sadler took over last summer. The primary duties include coordinating travel and scouting, and Sadler recently left to become a full-time assistant at Iowa State.
Self also announced that Jeff Forbes would return as the Jayhawks’ video coordinator.
