Officers were sent to the area near East 59th and Elm streets about 5:15 a.m. on a report of shots being fired. Officers found Smotherman dead inside a pickup truck that had struck a fence, police said.
The truck’s owner, who lived about two blocks away in the 5900 block of Crescent Avenue, said that he heard sounds outside his residence, near his parked pickup. Armed with a handgun, the man went outside to investigate and found a man inside his truck who appeared to be trying to steal it, police said.
The homeowner said he fired a shot when he thought the robber pointed a gun at him. The robber drove off in the truck. Police found the vehicle minutes later after it struck the fence.
