A southeast Missouri sheriff's department's staff has been cut in half following three firings and a resignation, but the sheriff says residents have no cause for alarm about reduced protection.
The Daily Journal newspaper in Park Hills, Mo., reports that Madison County Sheriff Bobby Spain fired three deputies for questioning his authority, and a fourth quit on her own.

The sheriff says the county remains safe. Members of the Fredericktown Police Department are commissioned to work in the county if needed. Spain says he has interviews set up for potential replacements.
Fredericktown is about 90 miles south of St. Louis.
