Water main break closes Walnut Street in the Crossroads Arts District

A 10-inch water main break late Monday night has forced the closure of Walnut Street in the Crossroads Arts District.

Walnut is closed between 18th and 19th streets. Repairs are expected to be completed by late Tuesday afternoon.

Kansas City Water Services sent out an advisory about 11:55 p.m. Monday alerting customers that they might experience low water pressure or no water service in the 1800 block of Walnut Street due to the break.

The break is affecting four buildings.

“One of the biggest challenges is that the break is in an older part of the city and the utilities underground look like spaghetti,” said Jennifer Kincaid, media relations coordinator for Kansas City Water Services.

Crews have to work around numerous services lines and relays to get to the break, she said.

The water main is believed to be from the early 1900s, but crews will know more about its age once they get in to replace it, she said.
