The Star names new vice presidents for the advertising and audience divisions

The Kansas City Star announced several business division promotions on Friday, including new vice presidents for advertising and audience.

Julie Terry was named vice president for advertising. Terry has worked in every advertising department at The Star since joining the company in 1994, most recently as director of retail and national advertising. For the past three years she has led the paper’s digital advertising efforts, including Digital Connect, ImpressLocal and Dealsaver.

“My passion for The Star and the opportunities that I believe lie in our future are great,” Terry said in an announcement Friday from Mi-Ai Parrish, president and publisher.

Terry graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in art history. She succeeds Tim Doty, who recently left the newspaper.

In addition, The Star announced that Chris Christian, vice president for audience, is leaving to become a vice president of a newspaper industry consulting company. He is being succeeded by Ken Batrick, effective May 13. Batrick, who graduated with a degree in business administration from the University of Missouri, joined The Star 32 years ago and has been circulation director since 2003.

“My focus will be to grow The Star’s readership, both in print and online, and to continue The Star’s deep tradition of investing in the community that it serves,” Batrick said.

The Star announced two other promotions:

• Michelle Jolles has been promoted to director of audience and product innovation and will oversee all of the newspaper’s marketing and promotions. She had been director of targeted publications and events.

• Jim Gorman, who has been the circulation sales and marketing manager, has been named to a dual role as audience sales director for The Star and regional audience director with responsibilities for The Wichita Eagle. The Star and the Eagle are owned by the McClatchy Co.
