Area could see flash flooding

Widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to continue the potential for flash flooding Wednesday and Thursday as a warm front lifts northward through the area.

The storms will bring at least 1 inch of precipitation and as much as 4 inches in some areas.

The chance for rain in Kansas City is 90 percent Wednesday and 100 percent Wednesday night, with even a possibility of snow Thursday night.

“The rainfall will be occurring over saturated ground,” according to the National Weather Service. “Any additional heavy rainfall will quickly run off into area waterways. … Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.”

Drought conditions have improved across much of the region, with pockets of severe drought still existing in east-central Kansas and west-central Missouri.

Both Kansas City International Airport and New Century AirCenter have now had greater than normal year-to-date precipitation.
