Two people were injured and hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash overnight in Kansas City, police said.

Officers responded to a reported crash just before 3:30 a.m. to Independence and Garfield Avenues in Kansas City’s Pendleton Heights neighborhood. According to early investigation details, the crash happened as a gray Chevrolet Impala drove east on Independence Ave.

At the same time, a gray Honda Odyssey drove west on Independence Ave when it crossed the center line near Garfield Ave. The Honda entered the eastbound lanes and struck the Chevrolet head on, according to a crash log.

Both drivers were transported to separate hospitals. The Honda driver suffered critical injuries, and the Chevrolet driver was recovering early Tuesday, police said.

Evidence at the scene led officers to investigate whether the Honda driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
